Baking is a science & the decorating is an art! You’re excited to bake with your SoBakeable baking box & are ready to go! Before you start baking, there are some things you should try to do perfectly to ensure your baking success! That means turning out baked goodies that taste as good as they look & look as good as they taste! Here at SoBakeable, we try do our bit to help make it faster & easier for you to make something gorgeous & tasty every month & by following these tips you’ll be sure to succeed!
1. Measuring is So Important
Like we said, baking is a science. Your measurements for each ingredient have to be so precise. We make this easy for you, by weighing & measuring each dry ingredient that goes into your baking box. This saves you time & fuss! Sometimes, we ask that you add some fresh ingredients from your pantry. When measuring liquids, like milk & water - be sure to use a measuring jug or measuring spoons. When measuring out butter, it’s easiest to cut along the measuring lines provided on the butter’s wrapping. Alternatively you can use your measuring spoons.
2. Ingredients Matter
Your baked goods will taste as good as the ingredients that were used to make them! That’s why it’s so important to use the best in quality ingredients that you can. At SoBakeable, we source premium ingredients to include in your baking box. To get the most from these ingredients, we recommend that you bake with your box soon after receiving it. This will make sure your ingredients are at their freshest.
When purchasing your pantry items, be sure to look for free-range eggs, as well as good quality milk & butter. The fresher your pantry ingredients, the better as well - so try use products as you purchase them.
When baking with butter, most recipes call for unsalted butter. Check the packaging when looking for butter in the supermarket, or your bakes could turn out too salty!
3. Don’t Peek Inside Your Oven
We know we’ve mentioned not to peek inside your oven in other blog posts, but we’re saying it again because it’s THAT important! All your hard work in the kitchen can be ruined, all because you were just too excited & had to look. We know it can be so tempting to see your goodies baking after you’ve poured so much love into them, but opening the oven before your cake is ready will let cold air in & cause it to flop! It’s important not to open your oven until the cake is almost ready to be tested for doneness - it’s worth the wait when it comes out looking perfect!
4. Always Preheat Your Oven
While we’re on the topic, make sure that you always preheat your oven. Most recipes will ask you to preheat your oven to the recommended baking temperature before you even start to get your ingredients out. This is because your oven will take some time to get up to the necessary temperature. Since all ovens are different, we recommend that your place an oven thermometer into your oven, so you can guarantee that it is the correct temperature for your bakes.
5. Always Let Your Bakes Cool
Your recipe should give you instructions on how to cool your cake. While it may not seem that important, it is vital that you do follow those instructions, as it can be the difference between success & failure. It’s usually best to let your cupcakes & cakes cool in the pan for a few minutes before moving to a cooling rack, helping you avoid soggy edges & making it much easier for you to handle the pan.
You’ll be especially glad you let your cake cool when you begin to frost it! If the cake is still warm, the heat from the cake will melt your frosting into the cake & down the sides ending in disaster. You’d also be left with crumbs getting pushed around in the frosting, when it comes time to decorate.
